Oatmeal 101

Oatmeal is one of the easiest, most filling and versatile breakfasts available. which is why it will always be a staple breakfast food for us.

Step 1 – Choose your base

Oatmeal doesn’t have to just mean the traditional rolled oats. Steel-cut oats, quinoa, or even buckwheat grouts are all interchangeable and a great way to vary your oatmeal routine.

Step 2  – Sweetener and Spice

Brown sugar and cinnamon is likely the oatmeal sweetener and spice combo you grew up on, but nearly any sweetener and warming spice (think cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom) are a great addition to your oatmeal. We like to change it up with the season, maple syrup in the fall and agave in the summer!

Step 3 – Seasonal Fruit

At this point your oatmeal could be good to go, no need for anything more. If you want to expand your horizons a bit try adding seasonal fruit! Fresh, dried, or in jam form – you really can’t go wrong. Get creative here (after Thanksgiving, cranberry sauce is the perfect addition to your morning oatmeal!).

Step 4 – Protein Add-Ins

This is where you can really bulk up your oatmeal and make it into a hearty breakfast. Nuts, nut butter, flax seed, and granola are all amazing additions. No need to stop at just one, play around and find your favorite combo!
